Everybody loves a great parade… or two!
Check out the parades over Thanksgiving/Black Friday Weekend! This area is so fortunate to have all the talented and hardworking folks with the ability to put these parades together — it takes a lot of sponsors and great folks personally interested in their community to make these happen. Whether you are a coordinator, appear in the parade, or are excitedly lining the street as a spectator, thank you for being a huge part of these events.
The Fort Madison Lighted Christmas Parade, also known as the Parade of Lights in Fort Madison
Dating back to 1992 and billed as a Christmas parade, this event happens late Black Friday evening at 6:30pm along Avenue G in Fort Madison, Iowa each year. Even if you miss the parade this year, you don’t have to wait until next year to see it. The lighted floats appear each evening in Riverview Park along the riverfront in downtown Fort Madison through the opening week of January. Here’s a look back at 2017’s parade:
Burlington’s Lighted Holiday Parade
This parade takes place in downtown Burlington the Saturday evening of Black Friday Weekend each year — at 5:00pm. The route runs along Jefferson from 8th Street to Main Street. It features plenty of great Christmas music provided by various parade entrants as well as tons of candy for the kids. The parade of 2017 very well may have been the most-attended holiday parade I’ve ever seen.
A lot of community leaders of all ages appear in the parade — along with cars, trucks, motorcycles, a bus, floats, lights, moving parts, and, of course, the man of the hour, Santa. All nine reindeer, including Rudolph, are there. Santa, by the way, appears in his cottage in Nancy Neafie (Burlington’s first female mayor) Park at 6th and Jefferson following the parade every year.
Santa returns to the park at other times as well — including the Living Windows event on Thursday, December 13th, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00pm.
