From IGN News: Bandai’s Tamagotchi returns.
Tamagotchi: the electronic game on a keychain
The game allowed you to feed and ‘clean-up’ after a virtual pet. After carrying this thing around for a while, you no longer wanted the real thing. They came out in May of 1997 and were priced at a staggering $17.99 plus tax — even at that time — well worth the cost to Mom and Dad for not having to get the real deal, however.
I was already in high school when they were popular. Plenty of folks had one or two, and I remember checking one out for a couple minutes and thinking ‘neat’. Now they’re back in the United States, so if you’d always wanted one and didn’t get one of the original 82 million that were sold, this is your chance. As a bonus, the suggested retail price of $14.99 for the new run of Tamagotchi is actually less than the price 20 years ago. They have, however, been listed as high as $30 on Amazon. Hopefully they’ll make enough Tamagotchis for everyone that wants one to have one.
